Overview

The Tsiakkas winery was founded in 1988 just outside the village of Pelendri in the Troodos mountains, in the area of Pitsilia. The production of the first year was 500 bottles of a red wine called Thyrsos. Gradually new wines were created with the addition of a white and a rosé wine. The first wines were made from local varieties, as international varieties were almost non-existent in the Pitsilia region.

In the late 1990s, more and more international varieties were used to make the winery's wines. These varieties included Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Cabernet, Merlot and Grenache. Although some of these are still used by the winery, in recent years there has been a shift towards Cypriot varieties. Old forgotten varieties are being replanted such as Giannoudi and Promara. More research has been done on Xynisteri and Vamvakada, both in the vineyard and in the winery. Recently a new style of Kumandaria and Zivania has been added to the winery's products. The total area of vineyards under the winery's management now amounts to 13 hectares. These are located in Pelendri, and in nearby villages. All our vineyards are certified organic, since 1995. Gradually the cooperating vine growers were persuaded to follow organic farming as well.

Today the winery produces 200,000 bottles per year and sells mainly on the local market. High-end restaurants, 5-star hotels, wine shops and a small number of supermarket chains make up the local clientele. Exports are made to nine countries, namely Greece, the UK, the USA, France, Italy, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, China and Belgium.

Visit the winery

The winery is open every day, except Sundays and major holidays, from 09:00 to 16:00 for a tour of the vineyard, a tour of the winery and a tasting.  For those wishing to take a tour it is advisable to call in advance to ensure that the winemaker is available. There is no need to book a tasting as someone is always readily available. During the visit you will have the opportunity to learn about the history of Cypriot winemaking, visit the small wine museum and cellars and taste the wines while enjoying the view of the vineyard.  Recently, the winery has decided to open some Sundays during the months of May and November each year. During these months our winery along with other wineries in the area will be open for guided tours and tastings by the winemaker himself. There is a good reason for choosing these months. During November visitors have the opportunity to taste the fresh white wines of the recent vintage and during May they can taste the red wines of the latest vintage.
